 Historical Information

 

 

Dunedin Council of Social Services (DCOSS) evolved from a committed group of men and women,

who had great ambitions, for what could be achieved by serving the community without taking sides.

DCOSS was formed at a time when the government appeared to be stepping back from the delivery of Social Services

 leaving the community to pickup the pieces and to this end

DCOSS was established in 1979.

 

 Below is a brief outline of the organisation's history.  Hope this provides you with some interesting information.

 

  • DCOSS was established in 1979 and Dunedin City Councillor Iona Williams was the first chairperson.
  • Brian Arnold became Chairman in July 1988.
  • Mrs Jill Binnie was the Executive Officer at the time.
  • Janice Grigor took over as Executive Officer in Nov 1988 and the office moved to temporary accommodation to the
  •     4th floor Civic Centre.

  • In 1989 the office transferred to the 1st floor of the Civic Centre.
  • The next move was to 414 Moray Place and Ann Wood took over the role of Executive Officer in 1991.
  • In 1994 Pam Warren assumed the role of Executive Officer.
  • In 1996 Paul Hudson took over as Chairperson after the untimely death of Brian Arnold.
  • In January 2001 Dunedin Community House was officially opened at 283 - 301 Moray Place Dunedin.
  • In 2006 Sue Russell assumed the role of Executive Officer on the pending retirement of Pam Warren.
